An Invitation to Support Cancer Immunotherapy Research
Cancer therapy has continually advanced, allowing many cancer patients to return to years of normal and healthy life. Yet, during 2020, cancer worldwide still accounted for over 10 million deaths, or nearly one in six deaths.
While chemotherapy approaches targeting specific genetic mutations are gradually emerging, cancer treatment has received a substantial boost through immunotherapy, led by anti-PD-1 antibody therapy. The success of immunotherapy has been clinically demonstrated in patients who had previously experienced cancer recurrence or had been unresponsive to chemotherapy. But despite broadening clinical applications, the field of cancer immunotherapy still has many challenges to address in order to deliver the maximum benefit to society.
With the aim of realizing this goal, the Center for Cancer Immunotherapy and Immunobiology (CCII) at Kyoto University was established in April 2020 as the first Japanese research institute dedicated to addressing the multi-faceted challenges of cancer immunotherapy, and aiming to lead the world in advancing state-of-the-art therapies for cancer patients.
Research at CCII integrates the cutting edge of medical knowledge and bio-analytical technologies to address unsolved clinical and basic science questions in cancer.
Further, over the past few years the Covid-19 pandemic has made it clear that, despite many decades of research, our understanding of the immune system remains limited and fragmented.
Achieving and maintaining such a world-class level of research, which translates into real benefit for patients in the clinics, requires substantial time and resources. This is where you, or your organization, can contribute and make a difference. Your contributions will accelerate research at CCII and empower leading scientists to work at a high pace and rapidly drive forward new methods and knowledge for cancer immunotherapy. Advances enabled by your contributions will be disseminated through CCII’s web site and at international conferences.
Together, we can change cancer and transform it into a curable disease. I hope you will consider joining us in our quest to reach this goal.
