概要

Dr. Richard Buus’ undergraduate education was at the University of Szeged, Hungary. He later received a Wellcome Trust PhD scholarship at the University of Liverpool, studying regulators of lung cancer cell motility. In 2009, he took up a postdoctoral researcher position at Queen Mary University working on PI3K signalling in pancreatic cancer and also studied part-time for a Bioinformatics MSc degree at Birbeck University, awarded in 2012. That year he joined the Ralph Lauren Centre for Brest Cancer Research at the Royal Marsden Hospital and the Institute of Cancer Research in London where he was supervised by Professor Mitch Dowsett. Richard’s work focused on prognostic and predictive biomarkers and gene signatures in hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. Richard contributed to the only large scale head-to-head comparison of the commonly used breast cancer molecular diagnostic tests. He demonstrated that some of the tests provided distinct prognostic information that also varied according to disease settings and these differences were largely explained by the tests’ molecular characteristics. These findings help clinicians interpret patients’ test results and select more appropriate treatments. Future work focuses on methods developing predictive biomarkers to identify patients most likely to benefit from additional treatment.
